Comparison
1.2083 vs 1.4034
1.2083 and 1.4034 both sit in the martensitic chromium family and are sometimes cross-referenced to AISI 420. It is not the same purchase. 1.2083 is corrosion-resistant mould steel (often ESR). 1.4034 / X46Cr13 is a knife and blade grade with higher carbon. 420C is the trade name, not the standard.
The short difference
1.2083 is chosen for moulds that are milled and spark-eroded in the delivery condition – cleanliness and polishability govern. 1.4034 is chosen when stainless has to be hardened for blades. Trade names such as Stavax belong to the mould steel track, not automatically to 420C.
- 1.2083 – mould steel, often ESR
- 1.4034 / X46Cr13 – knife and blade grade. 420C is the trade name
- AISI 420 is a family designation – not a single W.Nr.
Ordering
Write the W.Nr. and condition. We do not swap mould steel and knife steel on the basis of a loose 420 reference.
