Mechanical properties
Typical +QT values according to EN 10083-3
+QT. The table applies to the stated ruling sections up to 250 mm. The values do not automatically apply up to Ø825.
| Ruling section | Re min. | Rm | A min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| d ≤ 16 mm | 1000 MPa | 1200–1400 MPa | 9 % |
| 16–40 mm | 900 MPa | 1100–1300 MPa | 10 % |
| 40–100 mm | 800 MPa | 1000–1200 MPa | 11 % |
| 100–160 mm | 700 MPa | 900–1100 MPa | 12 % |
| 160–250 mm | 600 MPa | 800–950 MPa | 13 % |
The table stops at 250 mm. Larger diameters in the delivery range do not automatically have the same values. Heavy diameters and short parts may be forged before they are cut. The certificate locks the hardness you have specified.

Heat treatment of 34CrNiMo6
34CrNiMo6 is hardened and tempered. Hardening gives strength; tempering gives toughness, so the part does not become brittle. +QT – quenched and tempered – is the condition most orders are specified in. Normalising or soft annealing may be relevant before rough machining, but only when agreed. Furnace temperatures are not given here: they belong to the mill's procedure and the specified hardness. In large diameters the core properties depend on grade and heat treatment matching the cross-section.
Machinability
In +QT, 34CrNiMo6 is a tough high-strength steel. Machining is possible but more demanding than in the soft annealed condition, and tool wear has to be planned for. Sawing and rough machining should take place before final hardness if the drawing allows.
Weldability
Not a welding steel like S355. Welding requires a procedure and must be clarified before it is specified.
Sawing and machining
INDUSTRISTÅL cuts round bar to fixed length, also in large dimensions up to approx. Ø900 mm. Boring removes the core when the part is to be a ring or a heavy tube. Heat treatment to agreed hardness or +QT is ordered when the drawing requires it. Forged piece when length or diameter does not fit rolled bar. Supplied from a single cut piece to larger series without minimum charge. The grade can also be supplied deep-hole drilled to size: state outside diameter, bore diameter and length.
Documentation – 34CrNiMo6 with EN 10204 3.1 certificate
EN 10204 3.1 is included as standard – at no charge. Documentation follows the certificate issued by the mill and the requirements specified in the order. 3.2 and classification society are documented only when specified.
34CrNiMo6 vs 42CrMo4
Both are quenched and tempered shaft steels. 34CrNiMo6 is Cr-Ni-Mo; 42CrMo4 is Cr-Mo. 34CrNiMo6 is often used in larger cross-sections with high requirements for through-hardening and the combination of strength and toughness. 42CrMo4 is typically chosen in moderate diameters where the documented +QT values match the design. The choice depends on dimension, load, heat treatment and drawing requirements. One material cannot automatically replace the other.
Documented deliveries
78 pieces of 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582, Ø590 × 245 mm, to a Danish company in the defence industry, with special heat treatment requirements that we also handled, so the certificate follows the treated condition. The customer name is not published. A further delivery: round bar in 34CrNiMo6 heat treated at Ø580 and cut to part lengths, with 3.1 showing mechanical values after treatment. Together they show that heavy dimensions can be handled. It is not a promise that every diameter in the range can be supplied.

Also known as
On drawings and in purchasing, 34CrNiMo6 may appear as 1.6582, AISI 4340, SAE 4340, 4337, EN24, 817M40 or SS 2541. These are closely related or comparable designations – not a promise of identical chemistry or identical mechanical requirements. AISI/SAE 4340 also points to 36CrNiMo4 and 40NiCrMo6 in the catalogue. Chemical and mechanical requirements and the applicable standard must always be checked before substitution. The certificate carries the name the mill has issued.

Frequently asked questions
- What is 34CrNiMo6?
- 34CrNiMo6 is an alloy Cr-Ni-Mo quenched and tempered steel to EN 10083-3. It is hardened and tempered. The nickel addition contributes to toughness and core properties in large diameters.
- What Werkstoffnummer does 34CrNiMo6 have?
- W.Nr. 1.6582. The same grade can appear on the drawing as 34CrNiMo6, 1.6582 or both.
- What does 34CrNiMo6 +QT mean?
- +QT is hardened and tempered – quenched and tempered. Most orders are specified in that condition. The hardness must be stated on the PO if the requirement is more than “+QT”.
- What is 34CrNiMo6 used for?
- Heavy shafts, pins, gear parts in large cross-sections and forgings. 34CrNiMo6 is often used in larger cross-sections with high requirements for through-hardening and the combination of strength and toughness.
- Can 34CrNiMo6 be supplied as round bar?
- Yes. The delivery programme for 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 round bar is Ø20–Ø825 mm. The material is sourced from European partners, and we cut to size. The range is not current stock status. State Ø, length and +QT or another condition.
- Can 34CrNiMo6 be supplied with a 3.1 certificate?
- Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is included as standard and at no charge. 3.2 and classification society are documented only when specified.
- What is the difference between 34CrNiMo6 and 42CrMo4?
- 42CrMo4 (1.7225) is Cr-Mo and is often chosen in moderate diameters. 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582) is Cr-Ni-Mo and is often used in larger cross-sections with high requirements for through-hardening and strength/toughness. The choice depends on dimension and design requirements. They are not automatically interchangeable.
- Is 34CrNiMo6 the same as AISI 4340?
- No, not automatically. AISI 4340, SAE 4340, 4337, EN24, 817M40 and SS 2541 are closely related or comparable designations. Chemistry, mechanical requirements and standard must be checked before substitution. In the catalogue 4340 also points to 36CrNiMo4 / 40NiCrMo6.
- Can INDUSTRISTÅL cut 34CrNiMo6 to size?
- Yes. Sawing is standard – from a single piece to series without minimum charge. Boring and heat treatment are ordered when the drawing requires it. State length and machining allowance.
- Who supplies 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 in Denmark?
- INDUSTRISTÅL A/S is a Danish B2B supplier of 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582. We source chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel from European mills, cut round bar to size and deliver with EN 10204 3.1.
