Programme

Stainless steel for process and food industry

Stainless is a programme in its own right – not a footnote under bar steel. Austenitic, acid-resistant, duplex and the hardenable grades behave differently in welding, corrosion and price. We source what the drawing actually specifies.

Grades

1.4301 (304) for general construction and food. 1.4404 (316L) where there is chloride or acid. 1.4435 and 904L (1.4539) when 316L pits. 1.4462 (2205) when both strength and corrosion resistance must go up. Lean duplex 1.4162 when 304 is too weak and 2205 is more than the chloride level needs. 1.4003 (3Cr12) for stainless construction without austenite. Alloy 28 (1.4563) and A-286 (1.4980) when acid or heat exceeds 316. 1.4057 when stainless has to be hardened. 1.4116, 1.4110, 440A and 1.4024 for knives and blades in martensitic stainless. 253MA (1.4835) when temperature defeats austenite in process.

Where stainless ends

Nickel alloys, super duplex and titanium are a different programme. They sit under special alloys – bar, plate, tubes and accessories via European mills, not like 304 on the shelf.
