Comparison
2205 vs 316L
316L is austenitic acid-resistant stainless. 2205 is duplex: ferrite + austenite, higher strength and typically better resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride environments. They are not interchangeable without calculation and agreement.
When duplex
2205 is chosen when strength or chloride/stress corrosion makes 316L insufficient, or when the wall thickness can be reduced. 316L remains the standard choice in many process plants where austenitic is specified.
- 316L – 1.4404 – austenitic, widely available
- 2205 – 1.4462 – duplex, higher Rp0.2
- Welding and filler metal are a separate matter on duplex
Documentation
Write the W.Nr. and standard. Duplex often requires PREN or corrosion requirements on the order – not only “acid-resistant”.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I replace 316L with 2205?
- Only by agreement. Strength, corrosion, welding and standard differ. The certificate follows the material the mill has issued.
