Comparison
42CrMo4 vs 42CrMoS4
42CrMo4 and 42CrMoS4 are sisters in the Cr-Mo family. The S variant has raised sulphur for better machining. The W.Nr. differs: 1.7225 versus 1.7227. AISI 4140 is cross-referenced to both – the certificate decides which one you have received.
When S
42CrMoS4 is chosen when turning and drilling dominate and the drawing permits the higher sulphur. For critical dynamic loads, many drawings stay with 42CrMo4 without S.

- 42CrMoS4 – 1.7227 – improved machinability
- Both may be cross-referenced to AISI 4140 – still two certificates
