Comparison
S355 vs S355J2
S355 is the strength class. J2 is the toughness class: documented impact toughness at −20 °C to EN 10025-2. A part can be S355 without being S355J2. On the certificate and the drawing, the letters after S355 are as important as the number.
What the letters mean
S355 without a toughness designation is not the same purchase as S355J2. J0 is 0 °C, J2 is −20 °C, K2 and NL are other tracks. We supply the variant the certificate can carry.
- S355 – 1.0570 – strength class, without J2 requirement
- S355J2 – 1.0577 – impact toughness at −20 °C
- S355J2+N – normalised delivery condition, not a different steel
Purchasing
Write the full designation from the drawing. "S355" alone is too thin if J2 is the requirement. We do not promise J2 on a heat that is certified without it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I use S355 as S355J2?
- No, not if the drawing requires J2. The toughness class must be on the certificate.
