How to read a steel grade
A drawing may say 42CrMo4, 1.7225 or 42CrMoS4+QT. It is almost the same steel – and yet not. This guide is the map. The individual grades have their own pages.
Designation, W.Nr. and standard
The trade name (42CrMo4) is what purchasing writes. The W.Nr. (1.7225) is what the mill and the certificate use. The standard (EN 10083-3) is what the values are measured against. AISI 4140 is the American designation in the same Cr-Mo family – closely related and often cross-referenced, but not automatically the same specification. All four can be searched here.
Groups
Structural is welded. Quenched and tempered is hardened. Case-hardening gets a case. Pressure is documented to PED. Tool steel is bought on W.Nr. and condition.
