Case-hardening steel
20MnCr5 / 1.7147 case-hardening steel
20MnCr5 is an alloy case-hardening steel with Werkstoffnummer 1.7147. Slightly more carbon than 16MnCr5 gives a deeper case or better hardenability in coarser cross-sections with the same process. 20MnCrS5 / 1.7149 is available as the S variant. INDUSTRISTÅL supplies bar, cuts to length and ships with 3.1. Large gears often move on to 18CrNiMo7-6.
Typical applications
- Larger gears
- Wear surfaces in coarser Ø
- Case-hardened shafts

Dimension programme
| Form | Range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Round bar | Ø20–180 mm | When the case must go deeper than 16MnCr5. |
Parts of the range are held by European partners; other dimensions can be sourced. The range is not a current stock status in every diameter — stock is confirmed on enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 20MnCr5?
- 20MnCr5 / 1.7147 is a case-hardening steel with slightly more carbon than 16MnCr5. Same process: hard case, tough core.
- When is 18CrNiMo7-6 used instead?
- When the cross-section requires nickel and molybdenum in the core. 20MnCr5 is sufficient for many medium-sized gears.
- Do you supply 20MnCr5 as round bar?
- Yes. State Ø, length and whether the S variant is required.
