Case-hardening steel
16MnCr5 / 1.7131 case-hardening steel
16MnCr5 is alloy case-hardening steel, W.Nr. 1.7131, to EN 10084. Low carbon in the core, manganese and chromium for hardenability in the case. After carburising: hard wear surface, tough core. It is the reverse process of 42CrMo4. INDUSTRISTÅL supplies round bar from European mills, cuts to size and ships with EN 10204 3.1. State whether the part is to be case hardened at your end, or whether the condition is already on the bar.

Mechanical properties
Supplied to EN 10084 – not finished case hardened
Typically +A / +FP. Core strength after carburising belongs to the heat treatment.
| Tilstand | Hvad tabellen siger | Hvad den ikke siger |
|---|---|---|
| +A / blødtglødet | Bearbejdelig stang, typisk ≤ 217 HB | Ikke den færdige skalhårdhed |
| Efter indsætning | Hård skal, sejt kerne | Rm i kernen afhænger af Ø og procedure |
16MnCrS5 (1.7139) has the same framework but raised sulphur. We do not promise a case-hardening certificate the mill has not issued.
Chemical composition
Typical range according to EN 10084 (ladle analysis)
| Element | Range |
|---|---|
| C | 0.14–0.19 % |
| Si | max. 0.40 % |
| Mn | 1.00–1.30 % |
| P | max. 0.025 % |
| S | max. 0.035 % |
| Cr | 0.80–1.10 % |
16MnCrS5 / 1.7139 has the same C-Mn-Cr framework, but sulphur is controlled (typically 0.020–0.040 %).
Applications
- Gears
- Bolts with wear surfaces
- Case-hardened shafts
- Machine industry
Delivery conditions
- +A / soft annealed for machining
- 16MnCrS5 for machining
Heat treatment
Carburising and hardening at your end or at a subcontractor. The bar is typically traded untreated or soft annealed.
Sawing and documentation
Cut to size. We do not lock a case-hardening certificate the mill has not issued. EN 10204 3.1 as standard.
16MnCr5 vs 16MnCrS5
16MnCr5 / 1.7131 is the case-hardening steel without raised sulphur. 16MnCrS5 / 1.7139 is the S variant: same carbon, manganese and chromium, but sulphur is controlled upwards (typically 0.020–0.040 %) for machining. The certificate must carry the W.Nr. the drawing specifies. We do not mix 1.7131 and 1.7139 on the same certificate.
- 16MnCr5 · 1.7131 – standard case hardening
- 16MnCrS5 · 1.7139 – S variant for machining
- 20MnCr5 · 1.7147 – more carbon, deeper case
Frequently asked questions
- What is 16MnCr5?
- 16MnCr5 / 1.7131 is case-hardening steel. After carburising the case becomes hard and the core stays tough.
- Is 16MnCr5 the same as 42CrMo4?
- No. 16MnCr5 is case hardened. 42CrMo4 is through hardened. They are two processes.
- What is the difference between 16MnCr5 and 20MnCr5?
- 20MnCr5 has slightly more carbon. It is used when the case needs to go deeper or the cross-section is larger.
- Can you supply 16MnCr5 round bar?
- Yes. State Ø and length. 16MnCrS5 if the drawing requires the S variant.
- What is the difference between 16MnCr5 and 16MnCrS5?
- Same C-Mn-Cr framework. 16MnCr5 is 1.7131. 16MnCrS5 is 1.7139 with raised, controlled sulphur for machining. They are not two names for the same certificate.
- Do you supply 16MnCr5 as case-hardening steel in Denmark?
- Yes. The bar is sourced from European mills and cut to size with 3.1. Case hardening is typically carried out at your end or at a partner.
