Special steel cut to size – alloy bar and tool steel

Special steel is the term Danish engineering industry uses for everything that is not ordinary merchant steel: quenched and tempered round bar (+QT), case-hardening steel, spring steel and tool steel. The difference from S235 and S355 lies both in the alloy and in the purchasing: special steel is ordered by Werkstoffnummer and delivery condition, and the EN 10204 3.1 certificate is a fixed part of the product. As a Danish stockholder of special steel, INDUSTRISTÅL sources from European mills, cuts special steel to size – even a single piece without minimum charge – and ships with 3.1.

What special steel covers here

Quenched and tempered steels such as 42CrMo4 (1.7225), 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582) and 30CrNiMo8 (1.6580), supplied quenched and tempered (+QT) for shafts and machine parts. Case-hardening steels such as 16MnCr5 and 18CrNiMo7-6, where the case is carburised and the core stays tough. Spring steels such as 51CrV4 and 56Si7. Tool steel for dies, moulds and cutting edges – 1.2379, 1.2344, 1.2312 and the corrosion-resistant mould steel 1.2083. Martensitic stainless such as 1.4034 and 431 (1.4057) also belongs here, when stainless has to be hardenable.

Chromium-molybdenum, chromium-nickel and CrNiMo – avoid confusion

Within special steel, people often search broadly for alloy types such as chromium-molybdenum steel, chromium-nickel steel or CrNiMo steel. Technically they cover different families: CrMo steels (42CrMo4, 25CrMo4) and CrNiMo steels (34CrNiMo6, 30CrNiMo8) in EN 10083-3 are quenched and tempered steels (+QT), whereas CrNi steels such as 15CrNi6 / 17CrNi6-6 and 18CrNiMo7-6 in EN 10084 are case-hardening steels for carburising. Stainless Cr-Ni steels (304 / 316L) and nickel-based special alloys (Alloy 625 / 825) are not hardened and sit in their own programmes.

What is not special steel

S235 and S355 are weldable structural steel (merchant steel) – bought on standard, dimension and impact class. P265GH, P355NH and 16Mo3 are pressure vessel steels with their own PED track. Austenitic stainless such as 304 and 316L is a third programme, and nickel alloys, super duplex and titanium belong to special alloys.

How to order special steel correctly

State W.Nr. and delivery condition. “42CrMo4” without a condition can be as rolled, +N or +QT, and the three are not the same product. Trade names such as Stavax, Sverker, Orvar and Holdax we translate to the W.Nr. the mill can carry on the certificate – we do not write a brand the certificate does not cover. If a specific hardness or a 3.2 is required, it belongs on the enquiry from the start.

Special steel cut to size – small quantities and hard-to-find grades

Special steel is rarely something you need a whole merchant length of. We supply special steel cut to size in small and large quantities: from a single cut piece to larger series, without minimum charge, and cut to the sizes you need. This is also where we help as a stockholder to source the grades and intermediate sizes that are not held in ordinary stock – a DIN designation, a discontinued SS number or a large diameter. Documentation follows: on relevant materials, even a small delivery can be shipped with a material certificate to EN 10204.
