Structural steel
C45 / 1.0503 round bar cut to size
C45 is non-alloy carbon steel, W.Nr. 1.0503, to EN 10083-2. INDUSTRISTÅL sells it as round bar and pieces cut to size – not as a shelf item in fixed lengths. It is hardened in small cross-sections. It is not S355, and it is not 42CrMo4. C45N is the same W.Nr. in +N. C45E / 1.1191 has tighter P/S. In large diameters the core becomes too soft – then the switch is 42CrMo4.

Mechanical properties
Typical values according to EN 10083-2
C45 / 1.0503. C45E (1.1191) has the same strength table – the difference is P/S.
| Tilstand / tværsnit | Re min. | Rm | A min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| +N, d ≤ 16 mm | 340 MPa | 620–780 MPa | 14 % |
| +N, 16–100 mm | 275–305 MPa | 560–770 MPa | 16–17 % |
| +QT, d ≤ 16 mm | 490 MPa | 700–850 MPa | 14 % |
| +QT, 16–40 mm | 430 MPa | 650–800 MPa | 16 % |
Through-hardening does not reach in large diameters. Above approx. Ø100 many switch to 42CrMo4. C45+C is the cold-drawn condition – not a new W.Nr.
Chemical composition
Typical range according to EN 10083-2 (ladle analysis)
| Element | Range |
|---|---|
| C | 0.42–0.50 % |
| Si | max. 0.40 % |
| Mn | 0.50–0.80 % |
| P | max. 0.045 % |
| S | max. 0.045 % |
| Cr + Mo + Ni | max. 0.63 % (residual alloying) |
C45N is the same chemistry – +N is a condition, not a different analysis. C45E (1.1191) has tighter phosphorus and sulphur.
Applications
- Shafts in modest diameters
- Bolts and machine parts
- Parts hardened in small cross-sections
Delivery conditions
- Untreated
- +N as C45N
- C45E when E is specified
Heat treatment
Hardened in small cross-sections. Through-hardening does not reach in large diameters.
Weldability
Poorer than S355. C45 is not the steel you choose to weld a structure.
Sawing and documentation
Cut to size. +N or QT only when the condition is agreed and the certificate can carry it. EN 10204 3.1 as standard. C45 and C45N share W.Nr. 1.0503 – the condition is stated on the certificate. The grade can also be supplied deep-hole drilled to size: state outside diameter, bore diameter and length.
C45, C45E, C45R and C45+C
Drawings often mix C45 and 1.1191. They are two W.Nr. C45 / 1.0503 is the base grade. C45E / 1.1191 has tighter phosphorus and sulphur. C45R / 1.1201 has controlled sulphur for machining. C45N is still 1.0503, just +N. C45+C is the cold-drawn / bright condition to EN 10277 – same family, different process. The certificate must carry the name the PO has locked.
- C45 · 1.0503 – base grade
- C45E · 1.1191 – tighter P/S (older DIN Ck45)
- C45R · 1.1201 – controlled sulphur
- C45+C – cold-drawn condition, not a W.Nr.
Frequently asked questions
- What is C45?
- C45 / 1.0503 is non-alloy carbon steel. It is hardened in small cross-sections. It is not welded like S355.
- What is the difference between C45 and S355J2?
- S355J2 is welded. C45 is hardened. Same “structural” language, two different purchases.
- What is C45N?
- C45 supplied normalised. The W.Nr. is still 1.0503. The condition is the difference.
- Can you supply C45 round bar?
- Yes. State Ø, length and whether the certificate must say C45, C45N, C45E or C45R.
- What is the difference between C45, C45E, C45R and C45+C?
- C45 is 1.0503. C45E is 1.1191 with tighter P/S. C45R is 1.1201 with controlled sulphur. C45+C is the cold-drawn condition – not a new W.Nr.
- Can C45 be supplied cut to size in larger dimensions?
- Yes, as a cut piece. Through-hardening still only reaches in small cross-sections. Above approx. Ø100 many switch to 42CrMo4.
