Structural steel
C45E / 1.1191 carbon steel
C45E is an unalloyed carbon steel, W.Nr. 1.1191, to EN 10083-2. It is not C45 / 1.0503. E means tighter phosphorus and sulphur, so hardening and machining become more predictable. Older drawings specify Ck45. INDUSTRISTÅL supplies round bar, cuts to length and ships with EN 10204/3.1. Same hardening limit as C45 – in coarse Ø the switch is still 42CrMo4.
Typical applications
- Shafts with E on the drawing
- Machine parts with controlled P/S
- Parts hardened in small cross-sections
Delivery conditions
- +N
- +QT
- C45E+C when bright/cold drawn is specified

Mechanical properties
Typical values according to EN 10083-2
C45E / 1.1191. Same strength table as C45. P and S are tighter.
| Tilstand / tværsnit | Re min. | Rm | A min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| +N, d ≤ 16 mm | 340 MPa | 620–780 MPa | 14 % |
| +QT, d ≤ 16 mm | 490 MPa | 700–850 MPa | 14 % |
| +QT, 16–40 mm | 430 MPa | 650–800 MPa | 16 % |
1.1191 is C45E, not C45 / 1.0503. The certificate must carry the name the drawing specifies.
Chemical composition
Typical range according to EN 10083-2 (ladle analysis)
| Element | Range |
|---|---|
| C | 0.42–0.50 % |
| Si | max. 0.40 % |
| Mn | 0.50–0.80 % |
| P | max. 0.030 % |
| S | max. 0.035 % |
| Cr + Mo + Ni | max. 0.63 % (residual alloying) |
The difference from C45 / 1.0503 is P and S. C45R (1.1201) has controlled sulphur, not just a ceiling.
Heat treatment
Hardened in small cross-sections. Through-hardening does not reach coarse Ø.
Machinability and weldability
Weldability is poorer than S355. C45E is not a welding steel.
C45E and C45+C
1.1191 is C45E. C45+C is the cold drawn condition and can apply to C45 or C45E. If the drawing specifies C45 / 1.1191, it is C45E we commit to – not 1.0503.
Sawing and machining
Cutting to length. The certificate must say C45E / 1.1191 if that is what the PO has fixed.
Certificates and documentation
EN 10204/3.1 as standard. Ck45 on older drawings points here – the W.Nr. is 1.1191.
Dimension programme
| Form | Range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Round bar | Ø20–200 mm | Tighter P/S than C45. Same hardening limit. |
| Flat bar | Cut to order | State cross-section. |
| Square bar | Cut to order | State side length. |
Parts of the range are held by European partners; other dimensions can be sourced. The range is not a current stock status in every diameter — stock is confirmed on enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
- What is C45E?
- C45E / 1.1191 is an unalloyed carbon steel with tighter P/S than C45 / 1.0503. Same carbon framework, different quality class.
- Are C45 and C45E the same?
- No. C45 is 1.0503. C45E is 1.1191. We do not mix the two on the same certificate.
- Is Ck45 the same as C45E?
- Ck45 is the older DIN name that typically points to C45E / 1.1191. The certificate carries the EN name.
- Can you supply C45E round bar cut to length?
- Yes. State Ø, length and condition. +C if it is to be cold drawn – that is a condition, not a new W.Nr.
