Guide
How steel certificates work in practice
The 3.1 guide explains what the certificate is. Here is how it follows a piece we have sawn: from the mill's heat, through cutting to length, to the certificate you can put in the file. We do not charge for 3.1. We do not invent a certificate the mill has not issued.
From heat to sawn piece
The mill issues the 3.1 on the bar. When we cut to length, we cut length. The certificate still points to the same heat and the same condition. A sawn face does not turn rolled material into +QT. If the condition has to change, that is heat treatment – and a new certificate for the treated condition.
- 3.1 – heat-specific, the manufacturer's inspection
- 3.2 – external party, ordered before we lock in the material
- Classification society – DNV, ABS, TÜV per PO, not afterwards
What you need to write
Grade, dimension, condition and whether 3.1 is sufficient. If 3.2 or class has to be included, say so the first time. We cannot retrofit a 3.2 onto material that has already been cut from a 3.1 bar without that agreement.
Pressure and PED
On P265GH, P355NH and 16Mo3 the certificate is part of the product. We do not write S355 on a boiler certificate. See pressure vessel steel and the certificates page for what is included at no charge.
