Guide

What is a Werkstoff number?

The trade name is what purchasing writes. The W.Nr. is what the mill and the certificate use. 42CrMo4 and 1.7225 are the same material – until someone mixes up 1.7225 with 1.7228 or an S variant. This guide is the map, not a steel handbook.

Three names, one piece

42CrMo4 is the EN designation. 1.7225 is the W.Nr. EN 10083-3 is the standard the values are measured against. All three can appear on the same order. The search field here finds the grade by all three.

  • Trade name / EN – what the drawing most often says
  • W.Nr. – five digits with a point, what the certificate uses
  • AISI, Uddeholm, Böhler, Ovako – trade names on top of the same family

What a W.Nr. is not

It is not a heat. Two bars with 1.7225 can have different diameter, condition and certificate. Nor is it a stock promise. We look up the W.Nr. to hit the right family – then we lock in a specific material at the mill.

When the drawing mixes them up

1.7225 and 42CrMoS4 (1.7227) are sisters, not identical. 1.0577 is S355J2, not C45. If the PO gives a W.Nr. and a trade name that do not belong together, we ask before we lock in. See also the guide on how to read a steel grade.
