Stainless steel
253MA / 1.4835 heat-resistant stainless steel
253MA is a trade name for 1.4835. It is austenitic, heat-resistant stainless – silicon, nitrogen and cerium give a tight oxide scale when the temperature is above what 304 and 316 can take. It is not a 316L for wet chloride. We state 1.4835 on the certificate, even when the drawing says 253MA.

Silicon, nitrogen and cerium are what keep the oxide scale in place at high temperature. 253MA is a trade name – the W.Nr. is 1.4835.
What 253MA is
253MA is a trade name for 1.4835 – the EN designation is X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2, UNS S30815. It is austenitic, heat-resistant stainless steel to EN 10088-2 / EN 10095. Silicon, nitrogen and cerium are what keep the oxide scale in place at high temperature – above what 304 and 316 can take. It holds oxide scale in dry heat; it is not a 316L for wet chloride.
What it is used for
Furnace parts, burner tubes, recirculation, flue gas, cement and heat exchangers, where the part has to hold its oxide scale in a dry, hot atmosphere. Plate and tube are the volume. Round bar when the part is turned.

Delivery condition and dimensions
The typical condition is solution annealed. We source 253MA from European partners as round bar, plate, flat bar, seamless tube and welded tube, cut to your dimensions and ship the certificate with it. From a single cut piece to larger batches – no minimum charge, so you do not have to buy a full commercial length to get what you need. State form, dimension, quantity and which standard the certificate should follow. Stock status is confirmed on enquiry.
Processing
Plate and tube are the volume; we cut plate to size and cut tube and bar to length. Round bar when the part is turned. State on the enquiry whether the part should be supplied as a cut piece or a full length.
Certificates and documentation
253MA can be supplied with a material certificate to EN 10204, depending on the producer, the dimension and the specified requirements for the delivery. On stainless, the analysis and the delivery condition are what the certificate shows. If a specific test or an ageing/hardening condition has to be documented, it must be specified before we order. EN 10204 3.1 can be supplied on a wide range of our materials. We state 1.4835 on the certificate, even when the drawing says 253MA.
Designations
253MA is the trade name. The W.Nr. is 1.4835, the EN designation X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2 and the UNS number S30815. The standards are EN 10088-2 and EN 10095.

Versus 310S and 314
310S (1.4845) has more chromium and nickel. 253MA often meets the same oxidation with less material and a lower alloy price, as long as temperature and atmosphere suit it. 314 when the silicon has to go higher still. Dry heat is its home ground – in wet chloride it is 316L or duplex, not 253MA. Furnaces, flue gas and process heat: 253MA, 310S and Alloy 800H.
Dimension programme
| Form | Range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Round bar | Ø20–150 mm | Per job. |
| Flat bar | Cut to order | Stainless flat. |
| Plate | 3–40 mm thickness | Heat resistant. Not wet chloride. |
| Seamless tube | Ø13.5–Ø508 mm | DN8–DN500. Wall up to 31 mm. ASME 1/4–16″. |
| Welded tube | Ø21.3–Ø610 mm | Welded stainless. Wall to ISO 1127. State whether the weld seam must be documented. |
| Fittings | Ø12–Ø2000 mm | ASME 1/2–60″ (Ø15–Ø1524 mm). Type A and B. Not a stock statement. |
| Flanges | Ø14–Ø2000 mm | ASME 1/2–60″ (Ø15–Ø1524 mm). PN 6–400. Not a stock statement. |
Parts of the range are held by European partners; other dimensions can be sourced. The range is not a current stock status in every diameter — stock is confirmed on enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
