Structural steel
Alloy structural steel
Chromium, molybdenum and nickel give hardenability that non-alloy carbon steel does not have in heavy cross-sections. We supply alloy round bar and bar in quenched and tempered steel (chromium-molybdenum steel such as 42CrMo4 / 1.7225 and chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel such as 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 and 30CrNiMo8 / 1.6580), case-hardening steel (16MnCr5, 18CrNiMo7-6 and chromium-nickel steel such as 15CrNi6 / 17CrNi6-6) and nitriding steel. Cut to length with EN 10204/3.1.

Chromium-molybdenum, chromium-nickel and CrNiMo – how the families differ
Searches for ‘chromium nickel steel’, ‘nickel chromium steel’ and ‘CrNiMo steel’ in practice cover four technically different material groups, which must not be confused when ordering:
- Chromium-molybdenum quenched and tempered steel (CrMo, EN 10083-3): 42CrMo4 (1.7225), 42CrMoS4 (1.7227), 34CrMo4 (1.7220) and 25CrMo4 (1.7218) – the standard choice for quenched and tempered (+QT) shafts and machine parts in moderate cross-sections.
- Chromium-nickel-molybdenum quenched and tempered steel (CrNiMo, EN 10083-3): 34CrNiMo6 (1.6582) and 30CrNiMo8 (1.6580) – Q&T steel with nickel content for large cross-sections where through-hardening and high core toughness are required.
- Chromium-nickel and CrNiMo case-hardening steel (EN 10084): 15CrNi6 (1.5919), 17CrNi6-6 (1.5918) and 18CrNiMo7-6 (1.6587) – low-carbon steel for carburising (case hardening) of gears and crown wheels.
- Stainless chromium-nickel steel (EN 10088): 1.4301 (304) and 1.4404 (316L) – corrosion-resistant austenitic steels with ≥ 10.5 % Cr, which belong under stainless steel and are not Q&T or case-hardening steels.

Frequently asked questions
- What does +QT mean on alloy steel?
- +QT is hardened and tempered (quenched and tempered). Strength and toughness are set at the mill. The same W.Nr. in Ø80 and Ø400 is not the same material – the core of the large bar takes hardening less well.
- What is the difference between chromium-nickel steel, CrNiMo steel and stainless Cr-Ni steel?
- In alloy structural steel, chromium-nickel steel covers case-hardening steels such as 15CrNi6 and 17CrNi6-6 (EN 10084), while chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel (CrNiMo) covers quenched and tempered steels such as 34CrNiMo6 and 30CrNiMo8 (EN 10083-3) and heavy case-hardening steels such as 18CrNiMo7-6. Stainless chromium-nickel steels such as 1.4301 (304) and 1.4404 (316L) have ≥ 10.5 % Cr for corrosion resistance and belong under stainless steel – not alloy structural steel.
- 42CrMoS4 or 42CrMo4?
- Same chromium-molybdenum framework. The S variant 42CrMoS4 (1.7227) has controlled sulphur for better machinability, while 42CrMo4 (1.7225) has the ordinary sulphur limit. We supply the variant the certificate has to carry.
- EN 10083, EN 10084 or EN 10085?
- EN 10083 is quenched and tempered steel (25CrMo4, 42CrMo4, 42CrMoS4, 34CrNiMo6, 30CrNiMo8). EN 10084 is case-hardening steel (15CrNi6, 17CrNi6-6, 16MnCr5, 16MnCrS5, 18CrNiMo7-6). EN 10085 is nitriding steel (31CrMoV9, 34CrAlNi7-10).
